Why become a lifeguard

Why Become a Lifeguard

After completing their swim training and becoming expert swimmers, many of our students wonder whether they should pursue lifeguarding. If you’re someone that’s wondering whether it’s the right job for you, then we’re here to tell you that lifeguarding is one of the best jobs out there. Especially if you’re a student and working part time. Lifeguarding is one of the most rewarding jobs where you can learn a variety of different life skills. Below are some of the many reasons why you should get certified and start lifeguarding.

Impact Lives

Lifeguarding is rewarding because you get the opportunity to directly help people and save lives. It’s a great option for those that pride themselves on wanting to do meaningful work that has an impact on society. How many of your friends would be able to say they saved someone’s life at work? Even if you are not involved directly in rescuing someone, you can prevent harm or injury during everyday work. For example, you might warn people not to run on the deck knowing they could potentially fall and injure themselves.

Life Saving Skills

In pursuing life guarding, you learn a variety of different lifesaving skills such as CPR, first aid and more. These can be very useful in emergency situations where you might find yourself needing to help someone in need. There are a variety of different jobs that require these certifications or see it as an asset, so you will be getting a head start by completing these certifications earlier.

Hireable Skills

Being a lifeguard comes with a high level of responsibility. You’re trusted to be responsible for the safety of everyone that’s in or around the pool. Future employers will be impressed with your lifeguarding experience because they will know that you can be trusted in high stake scenarios. Lifeguarding also requires you to be quick on your feet and deal with unexpected situations. Employers will realize that you are someone that is able to solve problems when they arise and be counted on when things don’t go according to plan. Lastly, you’re required to remember multiple techniques and know how to respond to different scenarios. This shows employers that you have a good memory, are mindful and detail oriented.

Friendships

Lifeguarding is a job where you are usually never alone. Working alongside others will help you to enhance your teamwork skills as you often have to be in communication with other lifeguards to solve problems. You will work alongside other lifeguards who share the same passion for swimming and for helping people. This will help you to get to know people of different backgrounds who share similar values which will lead to fulfilling friendships.

Fitness

Lifeguarding is also a job that will require you to stay fit as part of your job. This is not something that they only encourage you to do outside of work hours however, but it’s also done during. Although you typically see them lounging on a chair or standing around, lifeguards sometimes workout before and/or after pool hours as part of their shift.
