Standard First Aid

Overview

Standard First Aid (SFA) – CPR-C

The Standard First Aid (SFA) course provides comprehensive training in first aid and CPR for a wide range of emergency situations. This certification is required for lifeguards, instructors, and many professional roles in aquatics and beyond.

Participants will learn:

  • CPR-C and AED use
  • Airway, breathing, and circulation emergencies
  • Management of bleeding, shock, and medical conditions
  • Treatment of injuries, including fractures and spinal injuries

Requirements

  • No prior certification required – Everyone is welcome!

Bronze Star

Overview

Bronze Star

The Bronze Star program is the entry-level lifesaving course in the Lifesaving Society pathway. It introduces participants to essential water safety principles, basic rescue skills, and personal responsibility in aquatic environments. This course is designed for confident swimmers who are ready to begin learning how to recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies.

Participants will learn:

  • Water safety awareness and injury prevention
  • Self-rescue skills and victim recognition
  • Simple rescues (non-contact and limited-contact)
  • Introduction to first aid concepts
  • Judgment, teamwork, and responsibility

Requirements

  • Minimum age: 12 years
  • Ability to swim comfortably in deep water

Bronze Medallion

Overview

Bronze Medallion

The Bronze Medallion program builds on foundational lifesaving skills and places a strong emphasis on judgment, endurance, and effective rescue techniques. This course is a critical step toward advanced lifesaving and lifeguard training.

Participants will learn:

  • Advanced rescue techniques (contact and non-contact)
  • Victim assessment and rescue priorities
  • Self-defense and release methods
  • Lifesaving fitness and endurance skills
  • Team-based problem solving and communication

Requirements:

  • Minimum age: 13 years
  • Successful completion of all Bronze Medallion fitness and skill evaluations

Bronze Cross

Overview

Bronze Cross

The Bronze Cross program prepares candidates for leadership roles in lifesaving and is a prerequisite for the National Lifeguard certification. This course focuses on complex rescues, decision-making under pressure, and managing emergency situations.

Participants will learn:

  • Advanced lifesaving techniques and complex rescues
  • Management of multiple victims
  • Leadership and lifesaving judgment
  • Emergency response planning and problem-solving
  • Preparation for lifeguard training environments

Requirements:

  • Bronze Medallion certification
  • EFA or SFA

Bronze Combo (Bronze Medallion + Bronze Cross + Standard First Aid)

Overview

The Bronze Combo is an accelerated and comprehensive program that combines Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, and Standard First Aid (SFA with CPR-C) into one streamlined course. This option is ideal for motivated candidates who want to efficiently complete the full Bronze pathway.

This program includes:

  • All Bronze Medallion skills and evaluations
  • All Bronze Cross skills and evaluations
  • Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification

Requirements:

  • Candidates must meet the Lifesaving Society prerequisites for each component
  • Strong swimming ability and physical readiness

National Lifeguard

Overview

The National Lifeguard (NL) certification is Canada’s nationally recognized professional lifeguard credential. This course prepares candidates to prevent incidents and respond effectively to aquatic emergencies through advanced rescue skills and teamwork.

Participants will learn:

  • Advanced surveillance and prevention strategies
  • Emergency response and rescue techniques
  • Team-based lifeguarding scenarios
  • Professional communication and decision-making

Requirements (Lifesaving Society):

  • Minimum age: 15 years
  • Bronze Cross certification
  • Current Standard First Aid with CPR-C

Swim, Lifesaving, and Assistant Instructor

Overview

The Swim Instructor certification prepares candidates to teach swimming and water safety to participants of all ages and abilities. The course focuses on effective teaching techniques, lesson planning, and safe supervision.

Participants will learn:

  • Lesson planning and instructional methods
  • Stroke development and skill progression
  • Safety supervision and risk management
  • Inclusive and age-appropriate teaching strategies

The Lifesaving Instructor certification qualifies candidates to teach Lifesaving Society programs such as Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, and Bronze Cross. This course emphasizes leadership, evaluation, and instructional excellence.

  • Teaching and evaluation of lifesaving skills
  • Leadership and candidate development
  • Course organization and safety standards
  • Professional feedback and communication

Overview

The Assistant Instructor certification is designed for candidates who are beginning their journey in aquatic leadership and instruction. This role allows participants to support certified instructors during Swim Instructor and Lifesaving programs while gaining valuable hands-on teaching experience.

Under the supervision of a certified instructor, Assistant Instructors help create a safe, engaging, and well-organized learning environment for participants.

Participants will learn:

  • Foundations of teaching and leadership in aquatic programs
  • How to assist with lesson delivery and skill demonstrations
  • Effective communication with participants and instructors
  • Safety supervision and class management
  • Professional behavior and teamwork in an instructional setting

Role and Scope:

  • Assist certified Swim Instructors and Lifesaving Instructors
  • Support lesson setup, skill practice, and participant engagement
  • May not independently teach or evaluate courses

Requirements (Lifesaving Society):

  • Minimum age: 14 years
  • Strong swimming ability
  • Interest in developing leadership and instructional skills

The Assistant Instructor pathway provides an excellent foundation for candidates who plan to advance to Swim Instructor, Lifesaving Instructor, or other leadership roles within TAC Aquatics.
